What type of wax do you use in your candles and wax melts?

We use coconut apricot wax as the base for our candles. This type of wax gives our candles a luxurious and creamy texture that we absolutely love. Some of our candles have fun wax embeds, which we make using soy wax. Our coconut apricot wax is container wax, which means it's designed to stick to the container it's poured into. As such, it doesn't come out of moulds as cleanly as pillar wax. That's also why we make our wax melts with coconut tart wax, specially designed for wax melts.

Are your candles and soaps made from natural or synthetic fragrances?

Candles:

Our candle fragrances contain synthetic ingredients. Essential oils are flammable substances. When added to candles, they can increase the risk of the candle flame becoming too large or unstable, potentially leading to fire hazards. Some essential oils have low flash points, which is the temperature at which they can ignite when exposed to a flame, making them more volatile and prone to combustion.

That is why we opt for fragrance oils specifically formulated for candle making. These oils are designed to be safer and more stable when used in candles. They are carefully formulated to provide consistent scent throw, burn cleanly, and minimize safety risks associated with combustion and flammability.

All of our fragrances have been approved for use in candles, are free from phthalates and parabens, and are used in the amounts recommended by the manufacturers. However, we have taken things a step further with our 'thoughtful fragrance' line, which eliminates any known carcinogens, mutagens, organ toxins, and reproductive toxins. If you prefer to avoid synthetic fragrances, we completely understand and will explore expanding our product line to align with your preferences. Please stay tuned for updates.

Soap:

I am enjoying the process of creating a line of natural soaps with essential oils, and I will be posting regularly on social media on its status.

Our other soaps contain paraben-free and phthalate-free fragrance oils. We often use natural colourants in our soap; however, some contain micas, a mineral ingredient in cosmetics, used widely to add shimmer and sparkle. Micas can be natural or synthetic. Should you wish to avoid micas, please see our ingredient list to do so.

Do you offer personalized or custom candle options?

To a limited extent, yes, I ensure that every candle formula I sell is tested thoroughly for performance and safety. This process includes testing the combination of vessel, wick, fragrance, and colourant. If any of these elements are changed, the formula must be re-tested, which limits customization. However, if you would like a fragrance that comes with a different colour vessel or you don't prefer the embed that comes with it, I can customize those things for you. I can also make fragrance-free candles for those who like the ambiance that candles provide.

How should I properly care for and maintain my candles?

When you order a candle from us, you will receive an infographic that will guide you on how to take care of your candle. To summarize, to maximize the safety and performance of your candle, make sure to trim the wick to 1/4 inch before each use and avoid burning it for more than 3-4 hours at a time. Additionally, if any debris or dirt gets into the candle, remove it before lighting it up.

Are your packaging materials environmentally friendly?

I have invested considerable time and effort into researching sustainable packaging options for our products.

For example, our wax melts are packaged in biodegradable sachets, rather than in typical plastic clamshells.

I re-use a lot of the packaging that comes with the materials and ingredients I order, so you may receive different packing materials when ordering. When we do purchase materials, we opt for paper-based packaging, which is recyclable. Although I have come across some eco-friendly alternatives, they are only available in bulk and do not seem financially feasible at this time. However, I have saved these options for future consideration as we expand.

Can I order your candles online, and do you ship internationally?

You can purchase candles from our website, but we only ship to Canada. You can also find our shop on Etsy, which does have international shipping. If you are in the US and interested in our products, please contact us. If there is enough demand, we may consider expanding our shipping options.

Are your products cruelty-free and not tested on animals?

All of our products are cruelty-free and have not been tested on animals. I have two rabbits named Artemis and Mars, a hamster named Loki, and a foster rabbit. As you may have guessed, we are named after a bunny, so it is important to me that our products are cruelty-free. I even have a tattoo of a leaping bunny to show how serious I am about avoiding animal testing.

Can I contact your customer service for additional assistance or inquiries?

We do not have a telephone number listed as we respond to inquiries outside of regular business hours. You can expect a response to your digital inquiries early in the morning or later in the evening.

Do you offer a subscription service for regular deliveries of your candles?

Not at this time, although I am interested in doing a quarterly subscription introducing our seasonal fragrances. 

Do you offer refunds?

At Artemis Illuminated, we are committed to providing you with high-quality products that bring joy to your space. Due to the nature of our handcrafted candles and soap, we generally do not accept returns or exchanges.

Exceptions: Damaged Items

While we take every precaution to ensure that your order reaches you in perfect condition, we understand that unforeseen circumstances may arise during transit. In the unlikely event that your product arrives damaged, please contact us within 7 days of receiving your order.

To process a damaged item return, kindly email us at info@artemisilluminaed.ca with clear photos of the damaged product and packaging. We will arrange a replacement or refund.

Are your products vegan-friendly?

All of our candles are vegan.

Many of our soaps are vegan; however, Bee-Witched contains honey and I am currently developing formulas with goat's milk. Once on the website, these products will be clearly labelled as containing dairy.

What are your processing times?

You can expect your parcel to ship within 3-5 days of purchase (although we aim for earlier).

Purchases are processed and shipped outside of typical business hours (i.e. outside of 9 am to 5 pm).
